Fix drywall to get a pro finish.

The Key to a Flawless Paint Finish: Prep Work
A smooth, professional-looking paint job starts with proper prep work—especially fixing holes and cracks in drywall. While it takes extra time and effort, the results are well worth it. If you’re unsure how to repair small cracks and holes, don’t worry—this guide will walk you through the process step by step.
Why Do Cracks Happen?
Small cracks can appear for various reasons, including minor shifts in a home’s foundation, seasonal expansion and contraction due to weather changes, or even drywall screws popping out over time. These hairline cracks may look concerning, but they’re quick and easy to fix with the right tools and materials.
What You’ll Need:
Drywall compound (such as DAP Drydex Spackling)
Box cutter
Sandpaper
Putty knife
Step 1: Prepare the Crack

Use a box cutter to carefully cut along the crack, removing any loose debris. If you notice hairline cracks radiating from the center, cut those out as well to ensure a clean, stable surface for repair.
Step 2: Apply the First Coat of Drydex

Using a putty knife, spread a thin coat of Drydex spackling over the crack or hole. It’s best to apply thin layers rather than one thick coat—this helps it dry faster and makes sanding easier. If needed, you can always add more layers after the first coat has dried.
Step 3: Sand and Reapply as Needed

Once the Drydex is completely dry, sand the area smooth. If you notice any low spots or imperfections, apply another thin coat of spackle, let it dry, and sand again.
Step 4: Repeat Until Smooth

Continue this process—applying thin coats, allowing them to dry completely, and sanding until the surface is perfectly smooth. Drying times vary depending on humidity and thickness, but typically range from 20 minutes to an hour.
Once the surface is smooth and blends seamlessly with the surrounding drywall, it’s ready for paint—no additional prep is needed!
